Lakhimpur district of Assam

 

The name Lakhimpur is believed to be originated from the word “Lakshmi”, the goddess of prosperity. The district was notified as Lakhimpur District through a proclamation issued by then Governor General on July, 1839.
  On 2nd October, 1971 the district was  reorganized with  two sub divisions viz. Dhemaji and North Lakhimpur.  Again in 1980

 It was reorganized  with two subdivisions viz. Dhakuakhana and North Lakhimpur leaving Dhemaji as a separate district. The district was earlier regarded as “Koliapani” because there was practically no road communication to this district till 1950.  In the year 1954, the temporary aerodrome was started. From 1957 the ASTC buses started plying from Lakhimpur and from 1963 the North East Frontier Railway started train services from this district. The district lies between 26048’ and 27053’ northern latitude and 93042’ and 94020’ east longitude (approx.) Forest are mainly tropical rain forest. There are several  reserved forests viz.   Ranga ,    Kakoi,  Dulung    and Pava Reserve.  Wild elephants, buffaloes, tigers, deer, hyenas are seen in the forest area with  varieties of bird species . The Bilmukh bird sanctuary and other protected area rich with migratory birds.

A 2000 MW Subansiri hydel project  by NHPC going on at Gerukamukh 60 Km away from N.Lakhimpur town f.   A gateway to several districts of Arunachal including Itanagar , Capital of Arunachal Pradesh g.  One of the few districts  where the golden thread  fabrics i.e. ‘muga silk’ is  grown prominently   h. Sizeable presence of SHG mostly women SHG i. Weather is excellent  except  heavy rain j. The bridges over mighty Brahmaputra at Bogibeel ( Dhemaji district) going on connecting Dibrugarh  k.  Presence of Air, Train and road communication  from state capital ie. Guwahati l. A  cultural hub  with several ethnic tribes m.  One of the 100 most economically backward districts of India identified by Planning Commission, GOI.  n. High seismic earthquake zone o.
